The mission of the FBI's Community Outreach Program is to provide a comprehensive effort that deals with multiple interrelated societal problems, including crime, drugs, gangs, and violence, in support of our investigative mission. Also, to ensure that the FBI does all that is possible within its available resources, to provide the assistance to victims and witnesses of federal violations as outlined in the legislation and the Attorney General Guidelines for Victim and Witness Assistance.

Recognizing the interdependency of children, parents, other adults, community groups, businesses, schools, social services, and health services, the FBI focuses its community outreach efforts on three areas: the community, the schools, and the workplace.

FBI community based efforts include forming partnerships with local groups, addressing community meetings, and working with existing community networks. Some FBI field divisions conduct a Citizens' FBI Academy for community and business leaders. On an annual basis, the FBI presents the Director's Community Leadership Award to citizens actively involved in improving their communities.

FBI school based initiatives centered around our Adopt-A-School Program including  the Junior Special Agent, Mentoring, and Tutoring Programs, which assist socioeconomically disadvantaged students to improve academically and develop into good citizens. Other school-based efforts involve FBI personnel as guest speakers or lecturers in existing crime, drug, gang, and violence prevention programs.

FBI workplace based endeavors include assisting local businesses establish crime, drug, and violence prevention policies; educating corporations about the dangers of substance abuse and violence in the workplace; and providing up to date information on how local crime, drug, gang, and violence problems affect the local business community.
