Beverly Man Sentenced to 132 Months for Armed Bank Robbery
CAMDEN—A Beverly man was sentenced to 132 months in federal prison today for committing an armed robbery of the Beneficial Savings Bank branch in Burlington Township, Acting U.S. Attorney Ralph J. Marra, Jr, announced. U.S. District Judge Noel L. Hillman also ordered Anthony Pack, 21, to pay a $1,000 fine and to serve five years of supervised release upon the completion of his prison sentence. Pack has been held without bail since his arrest by Burlington Township police officers as he fled from the Pack pleaded guilty before Judge Hillman on Sept. 11, 2008, to a two-count Information that charged one count of bank robbery and one count of carrying and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to the commission of a crime of violence. At his plea hearing, Pack admitted that at approximately 3:22 p.m. on June 19, 2008, he walked into the Beneficial Savings Bank branch located on Sunset Road in Burlington Township while carrying a silver Colt Python revolver and wearing a black ski mask and black gloves. After entering the bank, Pack admitted he approached the teller counter and pointed the firearm at tellers and demanded they fill the bag he supplied with cash. After the tellers complied with his demands, Pack fled the bank with approximately $21,664, he admitted. At the same time as the robbery, a Burlington Township police officer was on routine patrol in the area and spotted Pack running behind the bank. The officer gave chase as Pack ran through a wooded area and into a residential development. Pack then entered a silver Ford Taurus and attempted to speed away from the area. After a short distance, Pack crashed into another vehicle and then attempted to flee on foot before being arrested by responding officers. In determining the sentence, Judge Hillman consulted the advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, which provide appropriate sentencing ranges that take into account the severity and characteristics of the offense, the defendant's criminal history, if any, and other factors. The judge, however, was not bound by those guidelines in determining a sentence. Parole has been abolished in the federal system. Defendants who are given custodial terms must serve nearly all that time. Marra credited Special Agents of the FBI’s Trenton Resident Agency, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Weysan Dun; Investigators with the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi; and Police Officers with the Burlington Township Police Department, under the direction of Walter J. Corter, Director, for investigation of the case. The government is represented by Assistant United States Attorney Jason M. Richardson of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Camden. – end – Defense Attorney: Maggie Moy, Esquire Assistant Federal Public Defender
